Hundreds of CFA volunteers from across Melbourne’s inner northwest gathered in Bulla recently to run vital training and simulation exercises, as Victoria’s emergency services ramp up for the higher-risk weather season.

Hume CFA Group teamed up with crews from Forest Fire Management Victoria and the Victoria State Emergency Service at the Organ Pipes National Park for the annual Hume Group pre-season exercise.

Firefighters ran training exercises simulating fast-moving grassfires and bushfires and put into practice firefighting and incident management tactics.

The exercises involved detailed scenarios and included flags representing fires and simulated aircraft response. Volunteers were also able to build skills in managing major incidents.

Hume Group Second Deputy Group Officer Liam Gallagher said the event offered personnel an excellent opportunity to gain experience ahead of summer.

“This brings all our brigades across our group together in a real-life training scenario, to make sure we’re prepared ahead of the Fire Danger Period and the summer season,” he said.

“We had other agencies join our exercise this year, including the State Emergency Service, Forest Fire Management Victoria and the Salvation Army provided our catering for the day.

“Victorians can stay prepared for the upcoming fire season by making sure they prepare their property, and they can stay informed by downloading the VicEmergency app.”

This exercise is one of many taking place right across the state, ensuring our emergency services continue to prepare for this higher-risk period, helping keep our communities safe.
